First Break All The Rules by Buckingham
by Rob Redmond - April 10, 2008
What if a huge market research organization performed a massive study on management and found that the answers to six questions revealed almost everything about how well management was doing its job? What if that organization published their findings in an easy-to-read text that turns management on its ear? They did. This is it!
Marcus Buckingham is a Senior VP of the Gallup organization. Following a major study on management, he was able to not only analyze the results but come up with a consolidated concept of management skills that screams for corporate America to change direction through his unlikely to ever be enacted concept of broadbanding.
First Break All The Rules is a book about the entire process of the employment life cycle. From hiring to retirement, Buckingham demonstrates methodically how we in management create a system that results in the reality of The Peter Principle. He also defines how to avoid just that through superior employee selection, training, motivation, development, and performance management.
There are some really fantastic concepts in this book:
- The Temptations of Bad Management
- The Four Keys of Great Managers
- Unique and Enduring Talents
- Feedback
- Interviewing for Talent
- The difference between non-talents and weaknesses
Once exposed to the ideas in this book, you will never view your life at work the same again. You will find yourself dusting off practices that you thought you had a good handle on and re-examining a lot of what you do.
First Break All The Rules is a must-read. I wouldn’t recommend it as a first-read, however. Start with the Seven Habits, Effective Executive, and the Practice of Management. Then you will be able to appreciate what you have in Buckingham’s work.
